Increasing Freight Shipments
As bad as automobile traffic is today, it is the growth of freight traffic that threatens to overwhelm the U.S. transportation system and undermine its economic prosperity. Recent U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) reports indicate that demand for domestic freight transportation will increase to 22.5 billion tons by 2020 from 13.5 billion tons in 1998.
In other words, by 2020, U.S. highways, railways, and ports will be expected to move 70% more freight than they did in 1998.
SeaBridge will provide an alternative to crowded highways that complements trucking companies' existing business. Truckers will be able to drive their rigs onto SeaBridge ships to haul some of their loads. The SeaBridge route structure will enable truckers to save time and money thereby making their existing trucks and drivers more productive. When at maximum truck capacity, the SeaBridge fleet of ships will be able to move 800,000 truck trips per year away from the highways.
